Charlie Kratovil is a longtime New Brunswick resident and a proud homeowner on Suydam Street.  A Rutgers University alum with a degree in journalism, he founded an award-winning community news organization.  After a successful career as a journalist and activist, Charlie is ready to serve the people of New Brunswick as its first new Mayor in over 30 years.

Since 2011, Charlie has been the editor of New Brunswick Today, where he has worked with hundreds of reporters to shine a light on critical issues here.  In 2016, the NJ Society of Professional Journalists gave him the prestigious Stuart and Beverly Awbrey Award For Community-Oriented Journalism for his series of articles covering public corruption scandals at the New Brunswick Water Utility.  More recently, Charlie's reporting exposed the New Brunswick Parking Authority's longstanding violations of the law regarding its officer appointment process.

In 2018, Charlie was named as a “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Champion For Justice” at the New Jersey State Governor’s Jefferson Awards for Public Service, one of the nation’s highest honors for public service and volunteerism.  In 2022, he received the “Environmental Legacy Award” from the New Jersey Environmental Lobby for his leadership of a successful campaign to stop an Israeli company's plans to build a polluting power plant on the Raritan River.

A proud union member, Charlie continues to work as a community organizer at Food & Water Watch, a national environmental organization with an office here in New Brunswick.  With help from supporters and allies, he recently spearheaded the successful campaign to stop the city's plan to allow a data center to be bulit near homes and businesses on Jersey Avenue.

After many years of experience investigating the city government and advocating for progressive policies at the local, state, and federal levels, Charlie is running for Mayor to make New Brunswick more affordable and safer for all of the residents and families here.
